You heard it folks. Twitter served a meaningful purpose. A US grad student in Egypt was taking photos of a rally as part of his school project. Before he knew it him and his translator were locked up in an Egyptian jail for “provoking a riot”. The kid takes it upon himself to twitter that he had been arrested. Within 24 hours his location was found, the US Embassy phoned, and a lawyer from his university in Egypt to get him out of jail. Finally Twitter really does help us do something..stay out of jail!

The kid had this to say:

“The ability to communicate with the world via text messages helped assuage fears he would “fall into a black hole,” he said. “Whether it saved my life, or whether it just kept me sane, I don’t know”.”
